Summary

The group that organises the annual Tom Hurndall Memorial Lecture, established at Manchester Metropolitan University in 2005 in memory of Tom Hurndall, and whose sixteen lectures from 2005 to 2021 are gathered in For Palestine (For Palestine — Essays from the Tom Hurndall Memorial Lecture Group, PDF p.11, p.23-26).

Details

  • The group has no institutional funding and brings together colleagues from MMU, the University of Manchester, the University of Salford and the University of Central Lancashire; its blog is at https://hurndallmemoriallecture.wordpress.com/ (For Palestine — Essays from the Tom Hurndall Memorial Lecture Group, PDF p.11).
  • The lecture was initiated by a small group at MMU under Jules Townshend, who arranged the first five lectures; Ian Parker organised later lectures, with Anandi Ramamurthy, Annapurna Waughray, Christian Klesse and others taking responsibility for individual lectures (PDF p.23-25).
  • The group organised the lectures “against opposition from fervent supporters of the Israeli State, and in the face of repeated attempts to have the lecture series excluded from MMU premises”, and has pressed MMU since 2018 to install a commemorative sculpture of Tom, from whose plaque MMU management stipulated the reference to his death in Gaza be removed (PDF p.25-26).
